Some of you are there right now. You\u2019ve been running at a sprint for weeks\u2014maybe months!\u2014and it\u2019s starting to catch up with you.<\/p>\n<p>Why do we find ourselves here over and over again? And what can we do about it?<\/p>\n<h2>The Insinuations of Expectations<\/h2>\n<p>Expectations surround you. Sometimes, they\u2019re explicit, like your dad teaching you the best leaders are the first to arrive and the last to leave. Sometimes, they\u2019re implicit, like in the strategic silences your mom uses to speak volumes about your decision to send your kids to public school.<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes, they\u2019re impersonal, like the water we\u2019re swimming in. Think of the pressure to reinvent yourself, the glorification of \u201cbusy,\u201d the \u201calways on\u201d effect created by our phones, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/how-to-beat-a-burnout-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burnout culture of your company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These external expectations can quietly become internalized. We feel urgency or pressure to act in a certain way, elevating a decision to the point of morality with a well-placed <em>should: I should stay abreast of current events. I should attend that baby shower. I should set aside time for learning and development. I should be accessible to my team 24\/7.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Expectations aren\u2019t bad. In fact, they can be crucial, calling us toward our better selves. However, unexamined expectations frequently lead to overload. We all want to be good leaders, spouses, parents, friends, community members, and people. <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/how-to-redefine-success-for-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">But if we don\u2019t define what \u201cgood\u201d looks like<\/a>, based on some level of factual research and personal values, someone else will define it for us\u2014likely without us realizing it.<\/p>\n<h2>Defining Your Win<\/h2>\n<p>In the book <a href=\"https:\/\/winandsucceedbook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Win at Work and Succeed at Life<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Michael Hyatt and Megan Hyatt Miller discuss a principle called your \u201cnon-negotiables.\u201d These are your highest priorities that define success.<\/p>\n<p>One person\u2019s parenting non-negotiables might include school pickup, while another\u2019s prioritize morning connection or a bedtime ritual. One person\u2019s work non-negotiables might include limiting meetings to 50% of their calendar, while another\u2019s prioritize limiting phone use or offering \u201copen door\u201d hours with their team.<\/p>\n<p>When you <a href=\"https:\/\/businessaccelerator.com\/our-double-win-nonnegotiables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">define your non-negotiables<\/a>, you\u2019re separating <em>other people\u2019s <\/em>expectations from your own. This separation is a form of what psychologists call \u201cdifferentiation,\u201d in which you can say, \u201cThat\u2019s you. This is me. You can think that, and I do not have to agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Freeing Your Calendar<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have your non-negotiables identified, take another look at your calendar. It might help to print out a blank calendar sheet. Because that\u2019s how we\u2019re going to start: With a completely blank slate.<\/p>\n<p>Now, consider your commitments one at a time. Is it reflective of your priorities? If so, add it to the schedule. If you\u2019re motivated by a sense of \u201cshould\u201d coming from somewhere outside you, it\u2019s a candidate for elimination.<\/p>\n<p>If it <em>is <\/em>one of your priorities but doesn\u2019t require problem-solving or original thought, consider finding ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/four-tactics-for-automating-your-tasks-and-creating-space-for-work-life-balance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>automate<\/em><\/a> the activity\u2014like leveraging a weekly grocery pickup that auto-populates your usual items or scheduling a recurring date night blocked on your calendar.<\/p>\n<p>If it requires problem-solving or human participation, consider whether you could <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/4-reasons-delegation-fails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delegate<\/a> by enlisting someone else. Could your brother pick your kids up when he picks up your niece? Could your friend pick up the books you have on hold at the library and hand them off to you at an upcoming dinner? Could you pay your handy friend to look at your mom\u2019s broken washing machine?<\/p>\n<p>Notice the impact of expectations. Identify your personal priorities. Then, leverage elimination, automation, and delegation to create the space you need in your calendar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBusy\u201d is overrated.
