In fact, dreams that <em>stay <\/em>dreams can work against you\u2014keeping you stuck instead of leading forward.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we forge aspirations into goals. There\u2019s a world of difference between an aspiration and a goal. Aspirations can hang vaguely in an imagined future. Good goals demand action.<\/p>\n<p>SMARTER goals incorporate the best of goal achievement research. SMARTER is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Actionable, <a href=\"https:\/\/focusonthispodcast.com\/podcast\/66-what-smart-goals-get-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Risky,<\/a> Timebound, Exciting, and Relevant. Let\u2019s take a look at just two of these characteristics.<\/p>\n<h2>Step into the Future and Describe What You See<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you want to break bad money habits. You\u2019ve been overspending for as long as you can remember, and you want to use money more wisely. That\u2019s a good start, but it\u2019s not enough. Good goals are <em>specific. <\/em>How do you get there? <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/5-steps-to-a-bigger-brighter-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Step into the future and describe what you see.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In our example, you imagine a future in which you\u2019re living simply. You have what you need, but you\u2019re not trying to prove your worth through what you own. You\u2019re saving and giving more than you\u2019re spending\u2014but you\u2019re not afraid to splurge when celebration is called for. You\u2019re content.<\/p>\n<p>As you consider your imagined future, what resonates most deeply with you? How might you get there?<\/p>\n<p>You realize that what you really want is freedom from the impulse to spend. You <em>could <\/em>set a goal for what you\u2019ll save or create a budget to limit spending. But instead, you decide to focus on defying your impulse by giving money away<em>.<\/em> If you give away a lot of money, you\u2019ll necessarily have to start spending less. You\u2019ll enjoy the <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/habit-of-generosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numerous benefits of generosity<\/a>. And it won\u2019t be difficult to use the habits you\u2019ve learned to start saving.<\/p>\n<p>So you\u2019ve decided on generosity. Next, you\u2019ll need to get specific about where you\u2019ll give the money. Choosing specific causes or organizations helps cement your future.<\/p>\n<p>Notice how imagining the future lays the groundwork for specificity. When you step into the future and describe what you see, you can begin to discern what kind of goal will draw you into that imagined future.<\/p>\n<h2>Find the Right Metric<\/h2>\n<p>Good goals aren\u2019t just specific. They\u2019re also <em>measurable. <\/em>Measurable goals make it obvious when you\u2019ve arrived and help you track your progress along the way. Which metrics you choose <em>matter.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s continue with our earlier example. You\u2019ve decided to give money away. What metric will you use? Will you set a large dollar amount\u2014perhaps deciding to give away $20,000 this year? Will you settle on a percentage of your income to give away each month?<\/p>\n<p>The first option is an achievement goal. It opens up the possibility of reaching your ambitious number creatively through selling what you own, organizing a bake sale, or even taking money out of savings. The second option is a habit goal. It will help you get used to automatically giving money away. Your metric shapes your way forward.
