His message is clear: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want you in the office. Now.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His words might seem harsh, but they\u2019re not surprising. They reveal the tension between what employers want for their businesses and what employees want for their lives. It\u2019s not a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90763938\/remote-work-shouldnt-be-the-antithesis-of-in-person-work-heres-how-to-do-the-format-correctly\">conversation<\/a>. But it\u2019s one you might be navigating for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some industries, the nature of the work makes the way forward obvious. Surgeons and factory workers won\u2019t have the same expectations for remote work as marketers or managers. If you lead knowledge workers, it\u2019s more complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best place to start is to weigh the benefits of both in-person and remote work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of In-Person Work<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-person work was once the way of the world. And it came with several benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 1: Collaboration<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something happens when you get people into the same room to solve a problem. Virtual attempts to recreate the synergy of white-boarding aren\u2019t the same. There\u2019s more energy when we\u2019re in person. And the result is better ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 2: Innovation and Teamwork<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This benefit follows the first. Innovation happens in those problem-solving meetings. But it also happens in the cracks, in between formal meetings. It happens at water coolers and in side conversations. Those exchanges don\u2019t happen as naturally in virtual environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 3: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alankohll\/2018\/08\/14\/how-to-build-a-positive-company-culture\/?sh=17809aba49b5\">Culture Building<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relational equity is more naturally built in person. This is what carried our team during the first months of lockdown. We knew and trusted each other. We relied on preexisting relationships to sustain our culture. Expanding a team remotely is more difficult, because values are caught, not taught. Getting the work done is not the same as creating cohesion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 4: Facilitation of Hard Conversations<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of leadership is having hard conversations. You have to <a href=\"https:\/\/mh.fullfocus.co\/how-to-communicate-sensitive-information\/\">deliver bad news<\/a>. You have to coach up. The more personal those conversations can be, the better. It\u2019s easier to pick up on subtle cues in person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of Remote Work<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all the benefits of in-person work, remote work has benefits, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 1: Focus<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in the office can be <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/kill-distractions\/\">distracting<\/a>. When I need to finish asynchronous work, I work from my home office. No one interrupts me. I have more control over my environment. It\u2019s easier to be more productive and power through my tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 2: Communication of Trust<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refusing to allow for remote work communicates \u201cI don\u2019t trust you.\u201d It says, \u201cUnless I see you, I don\u2019t know you\u2019re getting work done.\u201d But how do you know your team is being productive when they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the office? Hiring people you trust means you don\u2019t need to look over their shoulder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 3: Returned Resources<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating the commute is no small victory. Commutes consume hours in our day. They\u2019re stressful. And, as we\u2019ve been well aware of this summer, gas is expensive. In that hour before or after work, your team can play with their kids, exercise, meal prep, read, go to the doctor. It improves <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/no-office\/\">the quality of their lives<\/a> and makes for more satisfied employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefit 4: Productivity of Virtual Meetings<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtual meetings can be more efficient than in-person meetings. Especially if the meeting is more transactional or informative, virtual meetings seem to lend themselves to productivity. They\u2019re not the best space for creativity, but they\u2019re incredibly effective for routine communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our team didn\u2019t want to lose out on the benefits of either in-person or remote work, so we chose a third way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Third Way: Hybrid Work<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full Focus has been a hybrid company even before the pandemic began. It\u2019s our \u201cboth\/and\u201d answer. And our Company Ideal Week has made it possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/idealweek\/\">Ideal Week<\/a> provides guidance for our team about our expectations. On Mondays, each of our teams holds their weekly focus meetings in the office, so our whole team is in the same space. For creative or problem-solving meetings, we also ask people to attend in person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we\u2019ve also created \u201cflex Wednesdays.\u201d They\u2019re meeting-free, and they\u2019re set aside for asynchronous work. There\u2019s no need for people to be in the office, or even work normal hours. Instead, we give our team the flexibility to work the hours they want to, as long as they deliver results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of our team ends up in the office one to two days each week. Executives and directors are often around even more. We collaborate and innovate. We create culture and have hard conversations. The rest of the week, we let our team focus and skip the commute. We have highly productive meetings. And we communicate to our team that we trust them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid work might not work for every company, but it\u2019s worth your time to give it a try. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many companies are struggling with the question of in-person vs. remote work.
