His first book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0684856360\/fwis-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Permission Marketing<\/a> (1999), helped me understand the importance of crafting messages that are anticipated, personal, and relevant. It shaped the way I think about the Internet as a communications medium.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/book-review-friday-tribes-by-seth-godin.jpg\" width=\"430\" height=\"430\" alt=\"Seth Godin's book, Tribes\" title=\"Seth Godin's book, Tribes\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since that time, Seth has written many bestselling books on marketing, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/159184021X\/fwis-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Purple Cow<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1419593331\/fwis-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Word of Mouth Marketing<\/a>, and, his newest, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1591842336\/fwis-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribes<\/a>. Each time he has challenged the status quo and turned conventional thinking on its head.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1591842336\/fwis-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribes<\/a> represents a subtle shift in focus. It is a book about a profound change that is taking place in marketing. While leadership and marketing are both about <em>influence,<\/em> leadership is influence without self-interest. This is what makes leadership the most powerful kind of marketing possible.<\/p>\n<p>Seth\u2019s basic premise is that a tribe is any group of people, large or small, that is connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. The Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All these tribes need is leadership.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where you come in.<\/p>\n<p>The Web can provide the tools, but you have to provide <em>the passion<\/em>. Anyone who wants to make a difference\u2014in their community, in their business, or in the world\u2014has the tools at their fingertips.<\/p>\n<p>This book explains the nature of tribes and how to build one. It also explains how you can use tools like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelhyatt.com\/fromwhereisit\/2008\/05\/12-reasons-to-s.html\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\">Facebook<\/a>, and blogs to extend your influence and connect with the tribe in new and powerful ways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1591842336\/fwis-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribes<\/a> is a short book\u2014only 147 pages. But its short size belies its true importance. As I read it, I was literally underlining every other sentence. I went through two hi-lighters before I finished!<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most important books I have read this year.
