That\u2019s a mistake because vision is critical both for evaluating short-term decisions and for creating a better future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coronavirus pandemic has been a major disruption to the world economy. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/01\/business\/economy\/coronavirus-recession.html\">believe<\/a> it will dwarf the effects of the 2008 recession, with fallout rivaling even that of the Great Depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With many businesses shuttered and others struggling to survive, some leaders are thinking only in tactical terms. They\u2019re concerned with week-to-week survival, not long term vision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"tweetable tweetalign_center\" style=\"width:100%\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\tVision is critical both for evaluating short-term decisions and for creating a better future.<cite>Michael Hyatt<\/cite>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\t\t\t<ul class=\"actions\">\n\t\t\t\t<li class=\"icon-arrow\"><a class=\"icon-twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?source=tweetbutton&text=Vision%20is%20critical%20both%20for%20evaluating%20short-term%20decisions%20and%20for%20creating%20a%20better%20future.%20https%3A%2F%2Ffullfocus.co%2F%3Fp%3D46252&via=michaelhyatt\" title=\"Share Quote on Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Tweet<span> Quote<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s understandable, but it\u2019s a mistake. The ability to survive any crisis begins with a vision for what\u2019s possible. That\u2019s true no matter how great the crisis. As I wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visiondrivenleader.com\"><em>The Vision-Driven Leader<\/em><\/a>, \u201cIf the vision is compelling enough, people will apply their best thinking and efforts to figure\u00a0 it out, regardless of the obstacles and opposition.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lesson from the Lost Moon<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may remember the movie <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apollo 13<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on the disastrous moon mission of the same name. The Apollo 13 spacecraft was damaged early in the flight, and the mission was aborted. But returning to earth safely was by no means certain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running low on oxygen and battery power, the three-member flight crew huddled together awaiting instructions. Meanwhile, NASA\u2019s ground crew, led by veteran flight director Gene Kranz, scrambled for solutions. Tension mounted as the hours ticked by.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the space ship neared the critical moment of re-entry, a senior leader remarked, \u201cThis could be the worst disaster NASA has ever seen.\u201d At that moment, Gene Kranz, said, \u201cWith all due respect, Sir, I believe this will be our finest hour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s visionary leadership. It was that vision of a positive outcome that enabled Kranz and his team to achieve. First, they envisioned the destination, a safe landing. \u201cFailure is not an option,\u201d Kranz said. Then they improvised, adapted, and created their way to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To survive this crisis, let alone thrive in the future, you need a clear, inspiring vision for what comes next. Here\u2019s why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision Produces Positive Change<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If ever there was a time we needed positive change, it\u2019s now. The surging economy that we rode into this crisis has been badly damaged. Some industries are closed temporarily, and many businesses will not survive. That\u2019s reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that\u2019s not the future. The pandemic will eventually come under control. When that happens, we\u2019ll need thriving businesses, jobs, goods, and services\u2014just as people always do. The businesses that thrive in those days will be led by those who look ahead to envision a better reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be foolish to ignore the current reality. It\u2019s also unwise to fixate on it. Leaders look for what\u2019s possible. They imagine what could come next. They picture a better tomorrow, then find a way to get there. That\u2019s how we make progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Negative Thinking Won\u2019t Save Your Business<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s often said that hope is not a strategy, and it\u2019s true. To make any progress, you need a vision, followed by a concrete plan. Wishing won\u2019t get you there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither will pessimism. Doomsday thinking and scarcity mindset are paralyzing. You cannot lead into the future if you\u2019re bound by negative thinking.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, take the threat seriously. Deal with it, mitigate it, be prepared. But a leader cannot afford to become reactionary. Fear won\u2019t stop a pandemic. And fear won\u2019t save your business. You need a vision for what comes next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People Crave Visionary Leadership<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When there is uncertainty, people look for leaders. That\u2019s true nations, communities, and families. And it\u2019s true of your business. Everyone wants a way out of this mess, and they\u2019ll follow the person who can identify it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherever you are leading right now, people are looking to you for direction. No matter what the current reality may be, they innately believe that something better is possible. Now is the time to lead with vision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And So It Will Be\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Apollo 13 capsule did indeed return to earth safely. Decades later, Jim Lovell, the captain of the flight crew, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/conversation-jim-lovell-thomas-lee\/\">asked<\/a> about Gene Kranz\u2019s legendary remark. Lovell said simply, \u201cAnd it was our finest hour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will 2020 be the worst disaster your business has ever seen? Or will it be your finest hour?
