{"id":45686,"date":"2019-12-30T04:06:21","date_gmt":"2019-12-30T10:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/?p=45686"},"modified":"2019-12-30T04:06:21","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T10:06:21","slug":"the-first-question-successful-people-ask-about-their-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/the-first-question-successful-people-ask-about-their-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Question Successful People Ask about Their Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently I had an idea for one of my coaching clients. It was a fundamental change to her business model that I knew would 10x her business and provide her with more personal margin to focus on her health and most important relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we talked, she got excited about the possibilities. But almost immediately, she started retreating from the idea. Why? Because she couldn\u2019t see <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it could be possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She voiced a litany of objections:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just don\u2019t think I have the bandwidth to pull this off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m not sure the technology is available to do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it would cost too much to implement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her response was not unusual. She was voicing a mindset that\u2019s common among entrepreneurs. It\u2019s also one of the things that keeps them from taking their businesses and their lives to the next level. They get bogged down in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before they get clear on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Mindset of Successful People<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not, however, the mindset of the most accomplished among us. There would be no iPhone if Steve Jobs had started with how. His engineers repeatedly told him they couldn\u2019t produce what he envisioned. But he just kept stating and restating the vision. The engineers eventually figured it out\u2014especially after he told them he would find new engineers if they didn\u2019t!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA would have never put a man on the moon if President Kennedy had started with how. On May 25, 1961, in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/about-jfk\/historic-speeches\/address-to-joint-session-of-congress-may-25-1961\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a joint session of Congress. He said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of <\/span>landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only one problem: the technology didn\u2019t exist. No one had a clue how it could be accomplished. And yet, just eight years later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon and returned safely home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To achieve anything significant, you have to start with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you want accomplish and suspend any discussion of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you will do it. That comes later. First, you must get clear on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easier said than done, right? You might be surprised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Seven Steps to a Bigger, Better Future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leadership <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1048984301000649\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirms that transformational leaders create a stronger, more effective vision by presenting a positive view of the future <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressing confidence that it will be achieved. Here are seven steps for developing a crystal clear vision without talking yourself out of it before you start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1. Set aside the how.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This needs to be a deliberate, conscious decision. Say to yourself (or others, if they\u2019re present), \u201cLook, I know I\u2019ll eventually have to figure out <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019m going to achieve this. But that\u2019s a consideration for another time. For the next hour, I\u2019m going to get clear on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This takes discipline. You\u2019ll be tempted to slip back into figuring out how you\u2019ll pull it off. In fact, the bigger the vision, the greater the temptation. This is normal, especially if the vision scares you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2. Stand in the future.<\/strong> Human beings are adept at being mentally detached from where they are. So let's use this to our advantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locate yourself at a point in time in the future. It can be a year, three years, or any future time you choose. The important thing is to choose a specific date, then mentally transport yourself to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>3. Use your imagination.<\/strong> This is where it gets fun. Too often we use this ability in a negative way. We imagine a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worse <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0future and then worry about it. Or we imagine everything that could go wrong in the pursuit of a better future and begin listing the reasons we should be content where we are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not the highest use of our imagination. To create a vision, we need to summon our best, most creative thinking to imagine a brighter, better future. This is where every improvement or breakthrough begins\u2014in our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>4. Employ all five senses.<\/strong> The more concrete you can make your vision, the more real it will seem and the more powerful it will be. One way to do that is to invoke each of your senses. For example,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you see? Describe it in vivid color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you hear? Describe any sounds you hear as you envision your future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you smell? Your olfactory system is one of your most sophisticated senses. Nothing triggers a memory faster than specific odors. Why not create a memory of the future?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you feel? Describe what you can touch in your vision?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you taste? This might not be applicable to every vision, but, if there\u2019s a component you can taste, describe it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>5. Record what you see.<\/strong> Nothing creates clarity faster than forcing yourself to write it down. As the old adage goes, \u201cThoughts disentangle themselves passing over the lips and through pencil tips.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do this in two stages. First, just do a brain dump. This is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creative stage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Write down the vision as a series of bullets. Don\u2019t worry about structure or even grammar. Just write. The goal is to get the vision out of your head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, go back and fine-tune. This is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">editing stage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now is the time to rearrange what you have and clean up the grammar. Keep tweaking until you get it 90 percent done. (Don\u2019t let perfection be your standard.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>6. Use the present tense.<\/strong> You might be tempted to write your vision in the future tense. After all, your vision is about the future. Don\u2019t do it. Instead, write in the present tense. That way, it will seem more real. It will also help convince your brain that the vision is going to happen\u2014it\u2019s already a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So for example, you might say,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur business generates $1 million a year in net income\u201d rather than \u201cour business <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generate $1 million a year in net income.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have 10,000 names on our mailing list\u201d rather than \u201cwe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build a mailing list of 10,000 names.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur membership site generates $20,000 a month in recurring revenue\u201d rather than \u201cOur membership site <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generate $20,000 a month in recurring revenue.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a simple tweak, but an important one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>7. Let it simmer.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one sense, the vision is never done. Until you achieve it, you will be tweaking it. That\u2019s because as you move toward it\u2014and begin to see it taking shape\u2014you\u2019ll gain even more clarity. As your vision comes into even sharper focus, you can revise it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this stage, it\u2019s also helpful to share the vision with your team or with people you trust. But be careful here. You don\u2019t want to invite naysayers into the conversation, who will dismiss your vision out of hand. Instead, you want people who can offer honest feedback and help you get even greater clarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Try It!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To create a brighter, better future for yourself and the people you lead, you have to start with the vision\u2014a clear, compelling view of the future. You can\u2019t afford to let yourself get bogged down in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">until you are clear about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you discipline yourself and your teammates to follow this process, it will become a critical tool for transcending the status quo and scaling your business.
