{"id":45176,"date":"2019-09-16T16:54:14","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T21:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/?p=45176"},"modified":"2019-09-16T16:54:14","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T21:54:14","slug":"the-simplest-way-to-generate-a-major-breakthrough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/the-simplest-way-to-generate-a-major-breakthrough\/","title":{"rendered":"The Simplest Way to Generate a Major Breakthrough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Clear, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B01N5AX61W\/?tag=michaelhyatt-20\"><em>Atomic Habits<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0 recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesClear\/status\/1140030869328936960\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cMost people need consistency more than they need intensity.\u201d In my experience, especially as a <a href=\"http:\/\/businessaccelerator.com\">business coach<\/a>, that\u2019s true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, for example, one of my clients experienced a significant revenue shortfall. It had a dramatic, negative impact on his cash flow and almost destroyed his business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, he focused on trying to find a big, dramatic solution\u2014the Hail Mary pass that would turn the situation around and win the game. He tried one thing after another. Nothing worked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that point, he reached out to me. I asked him, \u201cWhat is the one consistent behavior you could implement (or re-implement) that you <em>know<\/em> would lead to a turnaround.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without hesitating, he said, \u201cI need to make three sales calls a day, every day, five days a week.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I then asked, \u201cWhy do you think that will work?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, without hesitating, he said, \u201cBecause it\u2019s just math\u2014and it\u2019s something I know I can do. If I make fifteen calls a week, three of them will become customers. It will take several weeks to make a big difference, but it will work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some business coaches focus on <em>intensity<\/em>. They advise you to take \u201cmassive action\u201d in order to get the results you want. This can be helpful occasionally , but, in my experience, it\u2019s usually better to focus on <em>consistency<\/em>, just as my client did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s another example. Let\u2019s say you have a goal of writing your first book\u2014or, if you are already a published author, your next book. If you wanted to focus on intensity, you might rent a remote cabin for thirty days, kiss civilization goodbye, and write eight hours a day, every day for thirty days. I wrote my book, <a href=\"https:\/\/livingforwardbook.com\/)\"><em>Living Forward<\/em><\/a>, with Daniel Harkavy that way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach worked, but here\u2019s the problem I experienced:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It required a huge block of dedicated time, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It required a massive amount of motivation, so<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was easy to procrastinate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most changes I want to see, I find it\u2019s better to focus on consistency. This is generally much easier and leads to the same result over a slightly longer period of time. James Clear again: <a href=\"https:\/\/jamesclear.com\/habit-guide\">notes<\/a>, \u201cRather than trying to do something amazing from the beginning, start small and gradually improve . . . One percent improvements add up surprisingly fast.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of writing a 50,000-word book in 30 days, how about writing 500 words a day for 100 days?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of going on a two-week juice fast to get in better shape, how about eliminating sugar and processed carbs from your diet?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of waiting to start your business until you\u2019ve quit your job, how about pursuing your endeavor three hours a week as a side gig?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intensity approach is more flashy and dramatic. It makes for a good story. But slow and steady wins the race.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few people have achieved more than Warren Buffett. At 87, his net worth is valued at $86.5 billion. But his achievements were built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/from-6000-to-67-billion-warren-buffetts-wealth-through-the-ages-2015-08-17\"><em>one step at a time<\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It took him 35 years to reach $1 billion, and another 30 more to top $50 billion. Buffett <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/general\/2014\/09\/28\/25-best-warren-buffett-quotes.aspx\">said<\/a>, \u201cIt is not necessary to do extraordinary things to get extraordinary results . . . I don\u2019t look to jump over seven-foot bars; I look around for one-foot bars that I can step over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in Aesop\u2019s fable \u201cThe Tortoise and the Hare,\u201d the race is not always to the swift\u2014or, in my experience, to the intense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are three steps you can use to employ consistency rather than intensity to achieve your goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1. Get clear on your goal.<\/strong> Regardless of your approach, you have to start with clarity. <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/why-vision-is-more-important-than-strategy\/\">Vision always precedes strategy<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2. Identify the right behavior (i.e., a habit).<\/strong> The right behavior is one that, if successfully implemented, will enable you to achieve your goal. Don\u2019t make it too difficult. It should be relatively easy. The trick is in being consistent. You want the compounding results to work for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>3. Track your progress.<\/strong> You can make a tick in <a href=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\">a paper planner<\/a>, or create a recurring task in your task manager. Reinforce the habit by recording your progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>4. Enlist an accountability partner.<\/strong> This could be someone who wants to achieve the same goal, a formal coach, or just a friend who is willing to support you. I\u2019ve used all three with great success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just to close the loop, my client experienced a complete turnaround in his business. It didn\u2019t happen overnight, and it wasn\u2019t flashy. He was clear on what he wanted and just focused on making his sales calls. Little by little, he made the progress he needed to get things back on track.
