It's contagious to do great. No matter the theoretical architecture of your barrel, the quality of the apples you share it with matters.<\/p>\n<p>An actual bad apple in an actual barrel, according to <em>Mental Floss<\/em>, emits the \u201cgaseous hormone\u2026ethylene\u201d\u2014a ripening agent, which, concentrated, can trigger the same effect in other fruit. \u201cGiven the right conditions and enough time,\u201d the author explains, \u201cone apple can push all the fruit around it to ripen and eventually rot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same concept applies to people, with one huge exception. One \u201csingle, toxic team member\u201d has been shown to serve as \u201ccatalyst for group-level dysfunction.\u201d That was one finding of a 2006 paper in the journal Research in Organizational Behavior aptly titled, \u201cHow, When, And Why Bad Apples Spoil the Barrel: Negative Group Members And Dysfunctional Groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the huge exception that scientists found: With people, it only takes one good apple to save the barrel. That\u2019s good news, and it gets better. With the proper interpersonal skillset and knowledge base, you could, in fact, be that apple.<\/p>\n<h3>Learn to recognize your \u201cNick\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Culture-Code-Secrets-Highly-Successful\/dp\/0804176981\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=\/mhyatt-20\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-41119\" src=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/the-culture-code.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a>Dan Coyle opens his fascinating deep dive into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Culture-Code-Secrets-Highly-Successful\/dp\/0804176981\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=\/mhyatt-20\"><em>The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups<\/em><\/a> with the story of how University of South Wales professor Will Felps managed to force the \u201cbad apple\u201d effect out into the open for closer study.<\/p>\n<p>It begins with mischievous-yet-brilliant experiment concocted by Felps in which he brought together forty four-person groups \u201ctasked with constructing a marketing plan for a start-up\u201d\u2014then injected \u201cNick,\u201d an actor embodying three \u201cbad apple\u201d stereotypes: The Jerk, the Slacker, and the Downer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNick is really good at being bad,\u201d Coyle writes. \u201cIn almost every group, his behavior reduces the quality of the group\u2019s performance by 30 to 40 percent. The drop-off is consistent whether he plays the Jerk, the Slacker, or the Downer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previous research suggests this is not a fluke. As Felps himself noted in his 2006 Bad Apples paper, \u201csimply observing another person\u2019s expressions of effect can generate those feelings in others\u201d and \u201csubjects working together on a task partially adopted the confederates mood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further, \u201cwhereas a positive emotion (i.e. compassion) wears off relatively quickly, researchers find that when they give someone a negative feeling (i.e. anger) to concentrate in, the physiological effects last over 5 hours.\u201d In geek terms, the dark side of this force is strong.<\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"tweetable tweetalign_center\" style=\"width:100%\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\tIt only takes one good apple to save the barrel. With the proper skillset and knowledge, you could be that apple.<cite>Shawn Macomber<\/cite>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\t\t\t<ul class=\"actions\">\n\t\t\t\t<li class=\"icon-arrow\"><a class=\"icon-twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?source=tweetbutton&text=It%20only%20takes%20one%20good%20apple%20to%20save%20the%20barrel.%20With%20the%20proper%20skillset%20and%20knowledge%2C%20you%20could%20be%20that%20apple.%20https%3A%2F%2Ffullfocus.co%2F%3Fp%3D40989&via=michaelhyatt\" title=\"Share Quote on Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Tweet<span> Quote<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/aside>\n<p>Perhaps worst of all, the bad outcomes these phenomena may engender can gain destructive momentum. \u201cAfter a team failure occurs,\u201d Felps et al write, \u201cthe negative member behaviors are more salient, and thus more influential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before we begin our campaign to have the Academy create a Best Actor in a Social Science Experiment category, however, it\u2019s important to note our antihero was not able to get all his targets to go bad.<\/p>\n<h3>The downward spiral: a cautionary tale<\/h3>\n<p>In designing the experiment, Felps recognized that options for dealing with a bad apple were limited. In fact, the professor boiled it down to three, none of them very appealing.<\/p>\n<p>The first, \u201cmotivational intervention,\u201d is essentially an attempt to reform the negative employee by, say, \u201cwithholding of praise, respect, or resources until behavior changes, subtle and not so subtle confrontations, formal administrations of punishments, or demands of apology and compensation.\u201d Second is \u201crejection,\u201d or kicking the troublesome internal agitator to the curb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf either the motivation intervention or rejection is successful,\u201d Felps writes, \u201cthe negative member never becomes a bad apple or spoils the barrel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For whatever reason, if the first and second options are not possible, frustrated team members may descend into the third option, \u201cdefensive self-protection,\u201d manifestations of which can include \u201clashing out, revenge, unrealistic appraisals, distraction, various attempts at mood maintenance, and withdrawal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Happily, by the time Felps appears in Coyle\u2019s book a little over a decade later, through discord generator extraordinaire \u201cNick\u201d he has discovered a fourth, much more attractive option.<\/p>\n<h3>Finding your inner \u201cJonathan\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Out of the forty groups \u201cNick\u201d nudged and prodded toward chaos, thirty-nine took the bait. One hold out performed well regardless\u2014thanks to a single affable \u201cgood apple\u201d Coyle dubs \u201cJonathan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver and over Felps examines the video of Jonathan\u2019s moves, analyzing them as if they were a tennis serve or a dance step,\u201d Coyle reports. \u201cThey follow a pattern: Nick behaves like a jerk, and Jonathan reacts instantly with warmth, deflecting the negativity and making a potentially unstable situation feel solid and safe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then Jonathan pivots and asks a simple question that draws the others out, and he listens intently and responds. Energy levels increase; people open up and share ideas, building chains of insight and cooperation that move the group swiftly and steadily toward its goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The whole scene plays out like some modern-day workplace version of <em>The Screwtape Letters<\/em> with the shunned temptations piling up until Nick is left \u201calmost infuriated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41123\" src=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/stl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1089\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/stl.jpg 1089w, https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/stl-600x264.jpg 600w, https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/stl-768x338.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1089px) 100vw, 1089px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From this, Coyle draws two lessons about \u201cgood apples\u201d: One, though \u201cwe tend to think group performance depends on measurable abilities like intelligence, skill, and experience\u201d and \u201cnot on a subtle pattern of small behaviors\u201d in this instance \u201csmall behaviors made all the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second, Jonathan \u201csucceeds without taking any of the actions we normally associate with a strong leader. He doesn\u2019t take charge or tell anyone what to do. He doesn\u2019t strategize, motivate, or lay out a vision. In fact, the following sampling of simple, practical maxims from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Culture-Code-Secrets-Highly-Successful\/dp\/0804176981\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=\/mhyatt-20\"><em>The Culture Code<\/em><\/a> can get you started:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Close proximity, often in circles<\/li>\n<li>Profuse amounts of eye contact<\/li>\n<li>Humor, laughter<\/li>\n<li>Physical touch (handshakes, fist bumps, hugs)<\/li>\n<li>Intensive, active listening<\/li>\n<li>Lots of short, energetic exchanges (no long speeches)<\/li>\n<li>High levels of mixing; everyone talks to everyone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The message is clear: Intent, whether negative or positive, matters. The positive can win out, if it is integrated into an actionable plan and you understand what you're up against.<\/p>\n<p>At a personal level, it's good to know the good apple need not fear the barrel.
