Julius Caesar Watts memorably said that \u201ccharacter\u201d\u2014meaning good character\u2014is about \u201cdoing what\u2019s right when nobody\u2019s looking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watts would know a lot about people looking on. From the Oklahoma Sooners to the Canadian Football League to a Baptist pulpit and on to elected office, at both state and national levels, and then back into the private sector, the spotlight has followed him. One of the reasons I admire the man is that he\u2019s the first to admit that what it has illuminated hasn\u2019t always been pretty.<\/p>\n

Up and down, but not out<\/h3>\n

Some of the choices the former quarterback made, especially when he was young, have dogged him. Watts fathered two children while still in high school and had one of them adopted and raised by his own uncle to avoid scandal.<\/p>\n

When Watts became a player in the CFL in 1981, he was \u201cmaking real money for the first time in my life,\u201d he writes in the autobiographical leadership book Dig Deep<\/em>. J.C. didn\u2019t want to squander that money, so he invested much of it instead in a \u201cvariety of ventures in my home state, including real estate and oil and gas exploration.\u201d Then the price of oil plunged. There went his investments.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Watts confesses the recession brought him to the brink of bankruptcy. The only reason he didn\u2019t declare himself insolvent and bankrupt the debt was his upbringing. \u201cMy father had taught me that if you take on a financial obligation, you do everything you legally and ethically can to satisfy it. You don\u2019t just walk away,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n

Enter: mud<\/h3>\n

One thing that comes through in the book is that Watts\u2019s life has seen a lot of successes, and a lot of setbacks. In his estimation, he has succeeded not in spite of the setbacks but in some sense because of them. Specifically, he has succeeded because of the character he has built to weather the setbacks.<\/p>\n

Watts\u2019s first elected office was at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. There, his name was \u201cdragged through the mud\u201d because of an FBI investigation of corruption that predated his tenure. This dragged on for years and the very gossipy press reports followed him for long after.<\/p>\n

He had every incentive to be bitter about what happened. Most of us would have been sorely tempted. He looked at it differently. The lesson he took from the affair was this: \u201cIt\u2019s not what they did to me. It\u2019s what they did for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watts explains that \u201calthough this season in my life was unbelievably frustrating and hard, I came through it. In fact, I came through it stronger, wiser, and with an enlarged capacity to lead, love, and live. I learned things. I grew.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to run for Congress, serve as a temporary citizen-legislator, and return to the private sector. Among other ventures, he is currently trying to get a 24-hour cable news channel for African-Americans called the Black Television News Channel<\/a> off the ground.<\/p>\n

5 ways to get better character<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>In Dig Deep<\/em><\/a>, Watts argues that good character doesn\u2019t come naturally for him, or for most of us. He suggests five \u201chabits or practices\u201d that can help us to benefit from his outlook, if we\u2019re willing to make the effort to change.<\/p>\n

These attributes \u201care choices. I repeat, they are choices<\/em>\u2026 They are learned responses that can be cultivated in the heart and mind of any person,\u201d Watts writes. And these choices are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Reject bitterness and self-pity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
  2. \n

    Trust in God\u2019s goodness.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Maintain a heart of gratitude.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Cultivate a spirit of determination.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Laugh.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The second attribute will be a hard sell for folks who don\u2019t believe in God. Yet even if you don\u2019t believe in the Almighty, it\u2019s possible to benefit from a parallel concept: justice, a higher power of your own designation, progress, something like that. The point is to find goodness in life that you can appreciate.<\/p>\n

    As for the rest of us, Watts\u2019s most important attribute may well be the one that appears the slightest: Laugh. Doing the right thing can be hard. It can cost you money and lead to some dilemmas, like the time the author was staring down the barrel of a bankruptcy. But it\u2019s a horrible mistake to think that good character is a grim millstone around your neck.<\/p>\n

    Shrugging off bitterness and opening your eyes to new ways of seeing the world can also be freeing\u2014a real weight off your shoulders. And it\u2019s only natural that this new lightness of being should lead occasionally to laughter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
