When you set out to build a new business, you do so with the knowledge that many who have gone before you have failed.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there is one skill you can cultivate that will significantly increase your chance of success: effective empathy.<\/p>\n<h3>Unlocking your empathy advantage<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to brush past empathy as another \u201csoft skill\u201d that\u2019s nice to have, all things considered. But in the modern world of business, effective empathy is a skill that can make or break your ability to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>At its core, empathy is the ability to see life from another person\u2019s perspective, to \u201cput yourself in another person\u2019s shoes,\u201d as the saying goes. In business, effective empathy allows you to get inside the mind of your target audience, and identify problems (from their perspective) that you can help solve.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40486\" src=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/see-in-their-mind.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/see-in-their-mind.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/see-in-their-mind-600x319.jpg 600w, https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/see-in-their-mind-1400x744.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/see-in-their-mind-768x408.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/see-in-their-mind-1536x816.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Contrast this with the approach many entrepreneurs take: scratching their own itch by solving their own problems and selling the solution. Sometimes, this works\u2014but only because enough people with the same problem are seeking a solution. Maybe you'll luck out, but it' a risky bet.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c1ngel Cabrera, President of George Mason University, put it this way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ashoka\/2013\/03\/22\/empathy-in-business-indulgence-or-invaluable\/#32d47dce254e\">in a report from Forbes<\/a>, \u201cAt its very heart, a business is the beauty of bringing together people and things to make the community better off\u2014these are the businesses we admire. Empathy is the one tool that makes it all happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here are three practices I'd recommend for cultivating your empathy advantage:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Seek first to understand, then to be understood<\/h3>\n<p>This comes directly from Stephen Covey\u2019s classic bestseller, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/1451639619\/?tag=mhyatt-20\"><em>The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People<\/em><\/a>. When this approach becomes your priority, every interaction with a potential customer becomes \u201cHow can we help you?\u201d instead of \u201cHere\u2019s how we can help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That subtle difference completely shifts the conversation, making your potential customers feel valued. This approach keeps you on track to create products or services that meet real needs your audience shares.<\/p>\n<p>If you only adopt one of these practices, choose this one. Use data to understand others<\/h3>\n<p>Conversations with customers are crucial. But as your business grows, they become increasingly difficult to scale. That\u2019s where data comes in, which provides a high-level perspective on your audience\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<p>This data could be in the form of purchase trends, campaign success, or digital tracking data from a tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\/\">Google Analytics<\/a>. Inside <a href=\"https:\/\/platformuniversity.com\/\">Platform University<\/a>, we also recommend audience surveys as a great way to get a pulse on your audience from time-to-time.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the source, it's best to inform your empathy rather than relying solely on \u201cgut feelings\u201d or \u201chunches\u201d you haven\u2019t backed up with audience research first.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Test your assumptions, repeatedly<\/h3>\n<p>By its very nature, every new business is filled with assumptions. It\u2019s impossible to avoid that. The key is to identify your assumptions and test them, before <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/artists-dont-starve\/\">betting the farm<\/a> on a &#8220;sure bet&#8221; that might surely fail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0307887898\/?tag=mhyatt-20\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-40490\" src=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/9780307887894.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0307887898\/?tag=mhyatt-20\"><em>The Lean Startup<\/em><\/a>, Eric Ries identifies two core \u201cLeap of Faith\u201d assumptions which every business makes. The first is the \u201cValue Hypothesis,\u201d which assumes your product delivers value to the customer in some way. The second is the \u201cGrowth Hypothesis,\u201d which assumes new customers will find the product, and that the business model can scale.<\/p>\n<p>For your business to succeed, your assumptions about both value and growth need to be accurate.
