{"id":34253,"date":"2016-10-19T04:45:25","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T09:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/?p=34253"},"modified":"2016-10-19T04:45:25","modified_gmt":"2016-10-19T09:45:25","slug":"team-engagement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/team-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Ways to Boost Your Team Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I was talking to the leader of a nonprofit organization who was complaining that volunteerism was at an all time low. \u201cEven when people volunteer, most of them don\u2019t show up or follow through,\u201d he said. \u201cThey just don\u2019t seem to be engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>This is a common problem in the for-profit world as well. In fact, barely one in ten of the global workforce is engaged on the job, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/166667\/five-ways-improve-employee-engagement.aspx\">Gallup<\/a>. Most people are just checked out.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I spoke to a business leader in our area who was surprised to hear we don\u2019t have a centralized office and that all of our employees worked remotely, even our local ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no way I could do that,\u201d he said. \u201cI can hardly get my people to work even when I am right on top of them. They just aren\u2019t engaged. If I let them work remotely, they\u2019d spend all day goofing off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In both cases what\u2019s missing is connection. If there\u2019s no connection to the organizational vision, the team leader, other teammates, or organizational outcomes, then leaders will fight uphill battles on engagement everyday.<\/p>\n<p>But if leaders cultivate those connections, they\u2019ll build teams that are enthusiastic about driving results for the organization. Based on that understanding, my teammates are the most engaged employees I have ever seen. Specifically,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are enthusiastic about our mission, values, and products.<\/li>\n<li>They enjoy working with their teammates and are rooting for them to win.<\/li>\n<li>They are creative, energetic problem-solvers.<\/li>\n<li>They believe in our future and are willing to work hard to make it a reality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t happen by accident. <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/hire-the-best.html\">Careful hiring on the front end<\/a> is part of the mix. But so is intentional leadership in the ongoing life of the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Remembering the critical link to <em>connection<\/em>, here are four ways guaranteed to boost team engagement:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Connect your team to the vision.<\/strong> When our teammates don\u2019t understand or care how their daily tasks serve organizational goals, it\u2019s nearly impossible for them to maintain interest in their work. People laying bricks stay inspired when they realize they\u2019re building cathedrals. So take time to explain the <em>why<\/em> behind the <em>what<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connect your team to you as their leader.<\/strong> People don\u2019t work for companies; they work for other people. Often,\u00a0folks don\u2019t engage because their leaders don\u2019t engage them. When leadership is faceless, two-dimensional, or dismissive, they lose interest (or never commit to begin with). It\u2019s the leader\u2019s job to go first\u2014build rapport, demonstrate concern, and personally invest.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Connected your team to one another.<\/strong> People stay engaged with their work when they are engaged with their coworkers. Toxic organizational culture breeds disengagement\u2014emotionally healthy people will find their way to the door. Leaders should look for ways to cultivate mutual appreciation and create opportunities for positive shared experiences.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Connect your team to your results.<\/strong> One of the most important things I did as a leader at Thomas Nelson was begin regularly sharing our company financials. People could see what their daily work did to shape the quarter and the year. Transparency is a leader\u2019s friend.
