If there\u2019s one thing that stands out in the ongoing presidential election, it\u2019s the sheer nastiness. As a leader, I wouldn\u2019t hire any of the present candidates for my business. I wouldn\u2019t want to work for any of them either.<\/p>\n\n

My rejection comes down to one of the flashing neon features of this election: disrespect<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Insults? We Got \u2019Em<\/h3>\n

I see three ways disrespect poisons the presidential race:<\/p>\n

  1. Disrespect among the candidates.<\/strong> Candidates set the tone, and the tone is terrible. Arguments about policy and ideas have taken a backseat to the pettiest of personal attacks. And who am I kidding? Policy debates aren\u2019t in the backseat. They\u2019re being dragged from the bumper.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
  2. Disrespect among supporters.<\/strong> Following the tone set by candidates, supporters have joined in. They\u2019ve goaded candidates to further extremes of badmouthing and mudslinging, even verbally and physically mistreated fellow voters.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Disrespect for the American people in general.<\/strong> As far as I am concerned, this is the most important. Leadership is service. You can\u2019t lead people you don\u2019t respect. All you can do is boss and railroad.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Based on this third criterion, almost all the candidates are unfit to lead. Everyone vying for the White House has demonstrated varying levels of disregard for wide segments of the population. At best we\u2019ve heard talk about unity from candidates who are hard to believe.<\/p>\n

    What\u2019s Missing? Statesmanship<\/h3>\n

    We expect our congresspersons to represent narrow interests. That\u2019s their job. But the president does not represent one narrow interest, pitted against all others. The president is supposed to preside over the federal government.<\/p>\n

    The chief executive embodies the interests of the nation. He or she oversees the national bureaucracy, appoints judges, and defends the national interests on the international stage. We expect disagreements but not disdain.<\/p>\n\t\t
