It had some good pointers. But do you know the one thing it didn\u2019t say? <em>That people giving advice should know what they\u2019re talking about.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know about you, but I get advice from people all the time. Some of it\u2019s good, some of it\u2019s terrible. So how can we know if the advice we get is worth following?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>[periscope]I\u2019ll be discussing \u201cThe Kind of People You Should NEVER Take Advice From\u201d today at 12:30 p.m. CDT on #VirtualMentor.[\/periscope]<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago I was standing in line at the ice cream shop down the street from my house. Someone I know came through the door and we started talking.<\/p>\n<p>Before long the topic turned to health, and he started giving me diet advice. Now, my friend is not known for his physical fitness, far from it. So what did I do? I nodded politely and discounted every word.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is I see this disconnect all the time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A financial advisor who is broke.<\/li>\n<li>A social media consultant who only has a few thousand followers.<\/li>\n<li>A doctor who is overweight and out-of-shape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s my rule of thumb, and it rarely fails me: <em>Never take advice from people who aren\u2019t getting the results you want to experience.<\/em> If you don\u2019t like what you see in the life of the messenger, it\u2019s usually best to ignore the message.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you actually need advice? We all do. Here are five steps I follow whenever I need to get high-quality, actionable advice:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Identify someone who is getting the results you want to get.<\/strong> When I wanted to learn how to effectively launch products, I turned to <a href=\"http:\/\/jeffwalker.com\/\">Jeff Walker<\/a>. Facebook? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amyporterfield.com\/\">Amy Porterfield<\/a>. Every area of life\u2014fitness, finances, family, whatever\u2014has people who excel. Seek them out.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Study what they are doing and see if you can decipher the system.<\/strong> The next step is study. Notice how they approach problems or projects and try to piece their system together. What\u2019s the logic behind it?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Do exactly what they are doing\u2014without trying to tweak it or improve it.<\/strong> There\u2019s always magic in a good sauce. Don\u2019t start tweaking and customizing what works until you fully understand it\u2014otherwise you might miss something critical. Follow the steps until you master them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Try to meet with them to learn more.<\/strong> Sometimes we can make huge breakthroughs in person that we can\u2019t make at a distance. If you can, it\u2019s sometimes worth trying to meet with the expert you\u2019ve identified. A personal trainer, for instance, helped me get much better results in much less time than I was able to get on my own.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Get in a peer group of people who are all committed to getting similar results.<\/strong> We can reap massive rewards from building intentional relationships: learning, encouragement, accountability, and more. Some are longer and slower than others. I can\u2019t think of one time I\u2019ve chosen the longer, slower route. If I\u2019m going somewhere I don\u2019t want to waste time traveling.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same with taking advice. Some advice will get you where you want to go. Some will just send you in circles. Don\u2019t waste time. Look for people who can get you where you want to go with the fewest dead ends.<\/p>\n<div class=\"reminder\">What\u2019s the worst advice you\u2019ve ever taken?
