My day is the same length as everyone\u2019s, and frankly life\u2019s too short to read bad blogs.<\/p>\n\n<p>Once I started blogging over a decade ago, I became a student of the art. Through trial and error I learned what worked, what didn\u2019t, and how to improve my approach. I\u2019ve shared a lot of what I\u2019ve learned right here and at <a href=\"http:\/\/platformuniversity.com\/\">Platform University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I\u2019ve discovered is that when bloggers go wrong, we tend to do it in the same ways. And that\u2019s actually good news because it means it\u2019s easy to diagnose and fix many of our problems.<!--more--><\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"tweetable tweetalign_center\" style=\"width:100%\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\tEach of these seven common blogging mistakes can be a traffic-killer.<cite>Michael Hyatt<\/cite>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\t\t\t<ul class=\"actions\">\n\t\t\t\t<li class=\"icon-arrow\"><a class=\"icon-twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?source=tweetbutton&text=Each%20of%20these%20seven%20common%20blogging%20mistakes%20can%20be%20a%20traffic-killer.%20https%3A%2F%2Ffullfocus.co%2F%3Fp%3D30226&via=michaelhyatt\" title=\"Share Quote on Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Tweet<span> Quote<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/aside>\n<p>Here are the seven blogging mistakes I most often see. Each of these can be a traffic-killer. For me they\u2019re like flashing exit signs. And the truth is I\u2019m not the only reader that stops reading when I see them.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to gain and retain the readers your message deserves, you need to avoid these mistakes at all costs.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Your headlines generate more yawns than clicks.<\/strong> A boring, vague, confusing, or too-cutsey title won\u2019t attract readers, especially if they\u2019re already scanning dozens of posts and news stories. Successful bloggers sometimes spend as much time crafting compelling headlines as they do on their posts.\n<p>Try using CoSchedule\u2019s free <a href=\"http:\/\/coschedule.com\/headline-analyzer\">headline analyzer<\/a>, Copyblogger\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyblogger.com\/magnetic-headlines\/\">Magnetic Headlines<\/a> resource, or David Garfinkel\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/1933596252\/?tag=mhyatt-20\">go-to book on headline writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>You\u2019re not using imagery to your advantage.<\/strong> Readers are more visually attuned now than ever, and posts with images get more clicks than posts without. But that doesn\u2019t mean any image will do.\n<p>Flat, clich\u00e9d, badly cropped, unprofessional artwork can sabotage a great post. I use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.istockphoto.com\/\">iStock<\/a> for most of my blogging needs, but today there are countless sources for free, public-domain and creative-commons artwork. <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\">Flickr<\/a> is a great place to start.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Your posts aren\u2019t scannable.<\/strong> Let\u2019s say the headline and image draws me in, but your prose is dense and difficult to scan. Guess who\u2019s moving on. Online, what can\u2019t be scanned won\u2019t get read.<\/p>\n<p>You can fix this by using subheads, lists, and short paragraphs. These help readers get oriented and keep going. Unless you\u2019re an amazing stylist whose every word is magic, a lack of scannability is costing you readers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Your posts put readers to sleep.<\/strong> Scannable is not the same thing as interesting. Unless you\u2019re putting work into creating compelling posts, readers won\u2019t put the work into reading them.<\/p>\n<p>To keep your posts from sounding dry, preachy, and pointless, make sure you\u2019re sharing compelling stories, novel theories, counterintuitive insights, personal anecdotes, and humorous illustrations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re not consistent.<\/strong> The difference between cultivating a serious platform and having a hobby is all about consistency. If your whims are a good predictor of your frequency and subject matter, don\u2019t expect too many return readers.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the rule of thumb: Make your content surprising, not your posting schedule and subject matter. What if you can\u2019t find time to be consistent? Try <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/no-time-to-blog.html\">these seven strategies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t know who your audience is.<\/strong> If you\u2019re writing whenever and about whatever, then you\u2019re probably writing for just about whomever. To create ongoing appeal with an audience you need a better sense of who they are so you can meet their needs and match their interests.<\/p>\n<p>You can get a sense of this by seeing who\u2019s linking to your posts and what readers share in comments. But the best thing you can do to get quick insight is to conduct a reader survey with a service like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\">Survey Monkey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s easier to file your taxes than share your posts.<\/strong> This is big. Even with all the easy plugins for sharing posts, you\u2019d be surprised how many people don\u2019t use them. Are you?
