Some gadgets come with batteries and some don\u2019t. If I told you it\u2019s the same with people, what kind would you like to work with: those with or without batteries?<\/p>\n\n

I picked up this metaphor from an episode of Dan Sullivan\u2019s 10XTalk Podcast<\/a>. Dan said he basically divides everyone into one of two categories:<\/p>\n

  1. Those that have their own energy source (those with batteries)<\/li>\n
  2. Those that are dependent on others for their energy (those without batteries)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some may not like it, but based on a few decades working in both entrepreneurial and corporate settings, I\u2019d say the metaphor is spot-on.<\/p>\n

    Shortly after I listened to this episode, Gail mentioned a person we both know. He\u2019s got a lot of problems but could really use a job, she said. Would I consider hiring him?<\/em> \u201cNo,\u201d I said, remembering Dan\u2019s metaphor. \u201cI can\u2019t hire him. He doesn\u2019t come with batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n

    You probably know what that\u2019s like. Almost every work environment has a couple (or more) people who drain the team members around them. Not my company.<\/p>\n

    I am willing to help people without batteries, but I am not willing to hire them. I want everyone in my organization to have their own battery pack. If they don\u2019t, they just deplete everyone else. I want my people working to grow my business and reach their potential\u2014not wasting energy making up for someone\u2019s character deficit.<\/p>\n\t\t
