Probably like you, I take that on faith. But it\u2019s fun to see how research agrees that special benefits come from giving, not just receiving.<\/p>\n\n<p>Giving has been an important part of Christmas ever since the Three Wise Men presented their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But sometimes it seems like receiving is the main point of the holiday, doesn't it?<\/p>\n<p>I get it. I like receiving gifts as much as the next person. But if you want to give yourself a real gift, try generosity toward others.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>5 Research-Backed Benefits<\/h3>\n<p>Like expressing <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/gratitude-advantage.html\">gratitude<\/a>, there\u2019s a lot of research demonstrating that generosity enhances our quality of life. Here are 5 ways generosity gives back to us:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Generosity makes us healthy.<\/strong> Chronic high blood pressure kills millions every year. But one <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/want-to-do-something-good-for-your-health-try-being-generous-51084\">study<\/a> found generosity actually reduced blood pressure as much as medicine and exercise.\n<p>And it\u2019s not just blood pressure. Generosity also lowers the risk of dementia, reduces anxiety and depression, improves chronic pain management, and more. \u201cIf you were somehow able to package this into a compound, you\u2019d be a billionaire overnight,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/lifestyles\/health\/sc-hlth-0812-joy-of-giving-20150806-story.html\">Stephen G. Post of Stony Brook University School of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generosity makes us happy.<\/strong> Giving our time and money to others gives us an emotional boost. Why? According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/119477\/science-generosity-why-giving-makes-you-happy\">researcher Christian Smith<\/a> it\u2019s because feeling good is a product of doing good. It\u2019s built into our neurochemistry.\n<p>Giving triggers feel-good chemicals like endorphins, dopamine, and oxytocin. And it\u2019s true across cultural and economic lines, too, according to a Harvard Business School <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/faculty\/Publication%20Files\/11-038.pdf\">study<\/a>. It\u2019s just part of being human.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Generosity lowers our stress.<\/strong> We don\u2019t think of Scrooge as a mellow guy, do we? Here\u2019s why. It turns out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/10\/141028101625.htm\">being stingy<\/a> can actually raise our stress levels.<\/p>\n<p>After hooking people up to heart monitors, researchers found that when they felt they were giving too little in a transaction it actually drove up their stress. Being generous, on the other hand, kept stress down. It\u2019s like the Golden Rule in action.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Generosity improves our relationships.<\/strong> In a <a href=\"http:\/\/generosityresearch.nd.edu\/assets\/119703\/gen_and_marriage_equality.pdf\">study of generosity and its effect in marriage<\/a>, researchers found that the recipient of generosity expressed high levels of marital satisfaction, but so did the giver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[P]articipants\u2019 reports of behaving in a generous fashion toward their spouse were linked to their own reports of marital quality,\u201d said the researchers. \u201cThe extension of generosity toward the spouse was positively related to their own reports of marital satisfaction. . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Generosity extends our lives.<\/strong> All this adds up to longer life-expectancy. In fact, one study of 2,000 people in Marin, California, found volunteering dramatically reduced mortality rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubjects who volunteered for two or more causes had a 63 percent lower rate of mortality than people who didn't volunteer during the study period,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/health.usnews.com\/health-news\/health-wellness\/articles\/2015\/05\/01\/what-generosity-does-to-your-brain-and-life-expectancy\">one report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Make It a Habit<\/h3>\n<p>None of these studies are directly about Christmas, of course. But there\u2019s an important connection in my mind. How so? Thinking about God can actually lead us to be more generous.<\/p>\n<p>Two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2007\/08\/070829102048.htm\">related studies<\/a> demonstrate this\u2014not to mention years of personal experience. And Christmas is a natural time of year to turn our minds in this direction.<\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"tweetable tweetalign_center\" style=\"width:100%\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\tIf we want the full positive effect of generosity, we have to make it a lifestyle.<cite>Michael Hyatt<\/cite>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\t\t\t<ul class=\"actions\">\n\t\t\t\t<li class=\"icon-arrow\"><a class=\"icon-twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?source=tweetbutton&text=If%20we%20want%20the%20full%20positive%20effect%20of%20generosity%2C%20we%20have%20to%20make%20it%20a%20lifestyle.%20https%3A%2F%2Ffullfocus.co%2F%3Fp%3D27936&via=michaelhyatt\" title=\"Share Quote on Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Tweet<span> Quote<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/aside>\n<p>But we can\u2019t leave it there. If we want the full positive effect of generosity, we have to make it a regular, ongoing part of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Generosity \u201chas to be a practice,\u201d said Smith. \u201cThe empirical evidence was very clear. Nothing we tested where you just do it one time has an effect. But all the things that you have to sustain over time have that effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Post said being truly generous even once did have an impact, but \u201cit is best to do so with some regularity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The habit of generosity is the key. It\u2019s a lifestyle, and there\u2019s no better time of year than Christmas to begin giving that gift to others\u2014and to ourselves.<\/p>\n<div class=\"reminder\">Do you consider yourself a generous person?
