More than just hearing about them, a large number actually experience them. I certainly have.<\/p>\n\n<p>For some, it\u2019s about relational rifts and resentments. For others, <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/how-to-overcome-the-winter-blues.html\">including me<\/a>, it\u2019s about diminishing daylight and getting less exercise\u2014at least that has been the case for me in the past. Since discovering this about myself, I\u2019ve been intentional about addressing it.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s another factor we could be missing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>How Meeting Goals Boosts Our Happiness<\/h3>\n<p>In his book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1595555781\/mhyatt-20\">The Happiest Life<\/a><\/em>, Hugh Hewitt lists gratitude as one of the key ingredients to a happy life. It\u2019s worth thinking about since Thanksgiving leads directly into the period that so many have trouble.<\/p>\n<p>We just looked at <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/gratitude-advantage.html\">four ways<\/a> gratitude helps us flourish. Can gratitude also help us battle the winter blues? This is one way I think it can.<\/p>\n<p>Making meaningful progress toward significant goals is a big factor in the level of happiness we experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe successful pursuit of meaningful goals plays an important role in the development and maintenance of our psychological well-being,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/dont-delay\/200806\/goal-progress-and-happiness\">says psychology professor Timothy A. Pychyl<\/a>. \u201cTo the extent that we\u2019re making progress on our goals, we\u2019re happier emotionally and more satisfied with our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what does this have to do with gratitude?<\/p>\n<h3>Gratitude Brings Us Closer to Our Goals<\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0195373588\/mhyatt-20\">research by Robert A. Emmons and Anjali Mishra<\/a>, gratitude can actually help us make progress toward our goals.<\/p>\n<p>In one study, Emmons and Mishra had participants list goals they hoped to reach over a two month period. They checked back ten weeks later and found the grateful were closer than others in the study to reaching their goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGratitude enhances effortful goal striving,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure you can see where I\u2019m going with this. If making progress toward our goals leaves us feeling happier, and gratitude can help us reach our goals, then gratitude can have a direct impact on the level of happiness we experience.<\/p>\n<h3>Using the Gratitude Advantage<\/h3>\n<p>What\u2019s especially important about realizing this connection is that we\u2019re approaching the end of the year.
