This is important not only in hiring employees but especially in hiring consultants. A very few are bona fide experts. Some are traditional media people, who are repacking the same old advice using the new buzz words. More than a few are unemployed marketing people who discovered Twitter last month.<!--more-->In fact, I checked out one yesterday who had no blog and only a few hundred Twitter followers. There\u2019s no crime in that, of course. Unless you are billing yourself as a \u201csocial media expert.\u201d Then it\u2019s just ludicrous.<\/p>\n<p>How do you tell the difference? Here are my three rules:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure their claims are backed up by their numbers.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure they have been where you want to go.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure they know how to replicate their success.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You wouldn't want to attempt to climb Mount Everest, get half way up the mountain, and then discover that this is your guide\u2019s first climb. Neither do you want to follow the advice of someone who is (as they say in Texas) \u201call hat and no cattle.\u201d Reading a few books and articles on social media is not the same as building a successful social media platform.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than walking you through some negative examples, let me give you some positive ones. I faithfully read the blogs of <a href=\"http:\/\/sethgodin.typepad.com\/\" title=\"Seth Godin\u2019s blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seth Godin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisbrogan.com\/\" title=\"Chris Brogan\u2019s Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Brogan<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourhourworkweek.com\/blog\/\" title=\"Tim Ferriss\u2019s Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Ferriss<\/a>. I would be happy to take advice from any of them on building blog traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Look at the numbers from Compete.com (Disclaimer: this tool is not 100% accurate, but it is close enough for double-checking someone\u2019s claims):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/siteanalytics.compete.com\/sethgodin.typepad.com+www.chrisbrogan.com+www.fourhourworkweek.com\/?metric=uv&#038;months=6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fullfocus.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/three-big-blogger-stats.png\" width=\"570\" height=\"213\" alt=\"Compete.com Results for Three Big Bloggers Over Six Months\" title=\"Compete.com Results for Three Big Bloggers Over Six Months\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They all have significantly more traffic than I do. Therefore, when they speak, I listen.<\/p>\n<p>Or take Twitter. I get pitched several times a day from people who want to teach me, \u201chow to dramatically grow your follower count on Twitter.\u201d This claim to expertise is easy to check as well. In fact, if the so-called expert doesn\u2019t have more traffic than I do, I ignore them. On the other hand, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/guykawasaki\" title=\"Guy Kawsaki\u2019s Twitter Profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guy<\/a> has over 144,000 followers, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisbrogan\" title=\"Chrs Brogan\u2019s Twitter Profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris<\/a> has more than 83,000 and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/tferriss\" title=\"Tim Ferriss\u2019s Twitter Profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim<\/a> has more than 50,000.<\/p>\n<p>Again, I would be happy to take advice from them because they have built large followings\u2014without the benefit of traditional media platforms (e.g., a television show, movie career, etc.). Unfortunately, most of the people who are out there touting themselves as social media experts aren\u2019t. It\u2019s up to you to know the difference. That\u2019s why I start with the numbers.<\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000033; font-style:italic;font-weight:bold;margin-bottom:16px;\">Question: Who are the experts you\u2019ve found and listen to?
