I sure do. Once I was on the road, preparing to deliver a speech. I love speaking, but I was experiencing an unusual amount of distraction and self-doubt.<\/p>\n\n<p>I had about four hours before I went on stage. So, I decided to call my wife, Gail.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>A Call for Help<\/h3>\n<p>She instantly knew I wasn\u2019t in a good place. (This is one of the many benefits of long-term marriage. My wife can read me like a book.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay,\u201d she said after listening to me whine for a few minutes. \u201cI want you to hang up and go for a run. Call me when you are done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was tempted to blow her off, but I knew in my heart that she was right. I needed a big shift in my emotional state. And it wasn\u2019t going to just happen. I needed to do <em>something<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So I laced up and headed outside.<\/p>\n<p>When I called her an hour later, everything had changed. My emotional state had shifted\u2014dramatically. I was focused, alert, and upbeat. I had a can-do attitude.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Motion Drives Emotion<\/h3>\n<p>This was a good reminder of something we had learned years ago from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonyrobbins.com\">Tony Robbins<\/a>: <em>Emotion is created by motion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to change your emotional state, often all that\u2019s necessary is to change your physiology. I have experienced this firsthand again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t believe me? Try this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slouch in your chair<\/li>\n<li>Round your shoulders<\/li>\n<li>Take shallow breaths<\/li>\n<li>Close your eyes<\/li>\n<li>Frown and then sigh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re like me, almost immediately you\u2019ll start feeling down\u2014maybe even a little discouraged. As it turns out, discouragement and sadness have specific physical manifestations.<\/p>\n<p>But so does joy and confidence.<\/p>\n<p>This is why you can look at someone and say, \u201cYou look like you are having a difficult day.\u201d Or conversely, \u201cWow. You look like you are on top of the world!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>5 Tricks to Boost Your Mood<\/h3>\n<p>Over the years, I have learned (and Gail periodically reminds me) that I can change my emotional state for the better by focusing on my physiology rather than my emotions.<\/p>\n<p>So can you. Try these five simple tricks.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Put on some upbeat music.<\/strong> This can dramatically alter your mood, because of the memories you associate with certain tunes. Research also shows that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/business-economics\/musical-feedback-makes-workouts-feel-easier-exercise-health-68169\">energetic music<\/a> ups your energy when you exercise. Gail has a playlist, Music for an Outstanding Day. Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/play.spotify.com\/user\/teammichaelhyatt\/playlist\/5fWyKUYlAhlcJXvBVDjTjO\">Spotify link<\/a> if you want to listen along. It\u2019s awesome!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Stand up and stretch.<\/strong> Try to reach the ceiling. Get on your tippy-toes. If you are brave\u2014and no one else is around\u2014jump up and down for sixty seconds. Shake it out. Rotate your neck. Look up. One solution that I use and love is a <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/standup-desk.html\">standup desk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Take several deep breaths.<\/strong> Oxygenating the blood makes you more alert and awake. Close your eyes and concentrate on breathing. Draw the air deep into your diaphragm (or gut). This is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/relaxation-techniques-breath-control-helps-quell-errant-stress-response\">great way<\/a> to forget about what has you down or afraid.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Get your body in motion.<\/strong> The more vigorous you can move the better. Go for a run, a bicycle ride, or simply a walk\u2014preferably <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/nature-going-outdoors.html\">outdoors<\/a>. This stimulates your blood flow and gets oxygen to your whole body. If you do it long enough, your brain will release endorphins that elevate your mood.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Focus on the positive.<\/strong> \u201cAs a man thinketh in his heart, so is he\u201d (Proverbs 23:7). Think strong, positive thoughts. Affirm what you know to be true. Give <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/gratitude-advantage.html\">thanks<\/a> for <em>what you have<\/em> rather than what you don\u2019t. Shift your internal narration to what you <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/how-a-shift-in-your-vocabulary-can-instantly-change-your-attitude.html\"><em>get to do<\/em> rather than what you <em>have to do<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I usually leverage these tricks a few times a day. It gives me the energy and emotional boost I need to be productive and stay productive all day long.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The easiest way to get out of that funk is to change your physiology.
