It is not your experience, knowledge, or skills. It is your heart that matters most of all.<\/p>\n\n<p>Back in the mid-80s, I started my own business. My partner and I left big corporate jobs, developed a business plan, and began raising money for our new venture.<\/p>\n\t\t<aside class=\"tweetable tweetalign_center\" style=\"width:100%\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\tIt is not your experience, knowledge, or skills. Your heart is your most important leadership tool.<cite>Michael Hyatt<\/cite>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\t\t\t<ul class=\"actions\">\n\t\t\t\t<li class=\"icon-arrow\"><a class=\"icon-twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?source=tweetbutton&text=It%20is%20not%20your%20experience%2C%20knowledge%2C%20or%20skills.%20Your%20heart%20is%20your%20most%20important%20leadership%20tool.%20https%3A%2F%2Ffullfocus.co%2F%3Fp%3D10227&via=michaelhyatt\" title=\"Share Quote on Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Tweet<span> Quote<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/aside>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We had one investor who promised to make a sizable investment. He ran us through the ringer. The due diligence process was all-consuming. We really didn\u2019t have time to court anyone else. We made the fatal mistake of putting all of our eggs in one basket.<\/p>\n<p>After months of back-and-forth, the investor decided <em>not<\/em> to make the investment after all. We were left high and dry, with only $12.00 in our checking account. We were disappointed, angry, and ready to quit. We almost lost heart.<\/p>\n<p>That experience wouldn\u2019t be the last time I experienced an assault on my heart. In <a title=\"Post: The 7 Benefits of Keeping a Journal\" href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/daily-journal.html\">my journal<\/a>, I have cataloged almost twenty distinct situations where I was ready to quit and throw in the towel. In fact, as I have grown older, the conflict has intensified.<\/p>\n<p>This is why, I think, as leaders we must be diligent to guard our hearts. King Solomon said it best: \u201cAbove all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life\u201d (Proverbs 4:23).<\/p>\n<p>This is necessary for at least three reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Because your heart is extremely valuable.<\/strong> We don\u2019t guard worthless things. I take my garbage to the street every Wednesday night. It is picked up on Thursday morning. It sits on the sidewalk all night, completely unguarded. Why? Because it is worthless.Not so with your heart. It is the essence of who you are. It is your authentic self\u2014the <em>core<\/em> of your being. It is where all your dreams, your desires, and your passions live. It is that part of you that connects with God and other people.Just like your physical body, if your heart\u2014your spiritual heart\u2014dies, your leadership dies. This is why Solomon says, \u201cAbove all else.\u201d He doesn\u2019t say, \u201cIf you get around to it\u201d or \u201cIt would be nice if.\u201d No, he says, <em>make it your top priority.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Because your heart is the source of everything you do.<\/strong> King Solomon says it is the \u201cwellspring of life.\u201d In other words, it is the source of everything else in your life. Your heart overflows into thoughts, words, and actions.In Tennessee, where I live, we have thousands and thousands of natural springs, where water flows to the surface of the earth from deep under the ground. It then accumulates in pools or runs off into creeks and streams.\n<p>If you plug up the spring, you stop the flow of water. If you poison the water, the flow becomes toxic. In either situation, you threaten life downstream. Everything depends on the condition of the spring.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, if your heart is unhealthy, it has an impact on everything else. It threatens your family, your friends, your ministry, your career, and, indeed, your legacy. It is, therefore, imperative that you guard it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Because your heart is under constant attack.<\/strong> When Solomon says to guard your heart, he implies that you are living in a combat zone\u2014one in which there are casualties.Many of us are oblivious to the reality of this war. We have an enemy who is bent on our destruction. He not only opposes God, but he opposes everything that is aligned with Him\u2014including us.\n<p>Pastors are particularly vulnerable. <a title=\"New York Times: \u201cTaking a Break From the Lord\u2019s Work\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/02\/nyregion\/02burnout.html\">An August 1, 2010 article<\/a> in the <em>New York Times<\/em> reports that,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Members of the clergy now suffer from obesity, hypertension, and depression at rates higher than most Americans. In the last decade, their use of antidepressants has risen, while their life expectancy has fallen. Many would change jobs if they could.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Enemy uses all kinds of weapons to attack our heart. For me, these attacks often come in the form of some circumstance that leads to disappointment, discouragement, or even disillusionment. In these situations, I am tempted to quit\u2014to walk off the field and surrender.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\t\t<aside class=\"tweetable tweetalign_center\" style=\"width:100%\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\tIf your heart is unhealthy, it threatens everything else\u2014family, friends, career\u2014everything!<cite>Michael Hyatt<\/cite>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\t\t\t<ul class=\"actions\">\n\t\t\t\t<li class=\"icon-arrow\"><a class=\"icon-twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?source=tweetbutton&text=If%20your%20heart%20is%20unhealthy%2C%20it%20threatens%20everything%20else%E2%80%94family%2C%20friends%2C%20career%E2%80%94everything%21%20https%3A%2F%2Ffullfocus.co%2F%3Fp%3D10227&via=michaelhyatt\" title=\"Share Quote on Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Tweet<span> Quote<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/aside>\n<p>This is why if you and I are going to succeed as leaders\u2014and survive as individuals\u2014we must guard our hearts.
